ABOUT THE FOREST HILLS CEMETERY
|
FOREST HILLS CEMETERY is one of the finest examples of the garden cemetery in the United States. It was founded in 1848 to provide a magnificent park-like setting to bury and remember family and friends. Forest Hills is still an active burial ground, and is also a historic site, an open-air museum, and a 275-acre greenspace and arboretum. The distinctive Victorian landscape design features meandering paths, scenic vistas, and lovely lake Hibiscus. Many prominent historic, cultural and civic figures are buried here, including the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, suffragist Lucy Stone, poets Anne Sexton and e.e. cummings, playwright Eugene O’Neill, and sculptor Martin Milmore.
The Cemetery is open for visiting every day from dawn to dusk. You can request the Forest Hills Cemetery Tour Guide made by Susan Wilson by mail to the Office or choose to visit accompanied by a guide. Forest Hills Cemetery also held the Worshipping Ancestors activities.annually in Lantern Festiva. There were more than 3,000 people took part the Activities in 2000, in the evening at Lake Hibiscus, people lit candle lights, put them into the water, swaying lights floating away, send the griefs to the loved ones who passed away.
